A road and highway design engineer plans the alignment, levels and cross-sections of roads using survey data. This roadmap takes you from AutoCAD to Civil 3D corridor design, survey processing, MXROAD and project visualisation.
Learn AutoCAD drafting, layers, coordinates and plotting so you can read and prepare road plans, junction layouts and standard cross-section drawings.
Build surfaces, alignments, profiles, assemblies and corridors, then generate cross-sections and earthwork volumes. This covers the full road design workflow in Civil 3D.
Import total station and level data, clean point groups, build accurate ground surfaces and contours: the starting point of every road design.
Learn string-based road modelling in MXROAD, used by many highway consultancies for alignment, carriageway design, widening and quantity calculation.
Create realistic visualisations and fly-through videos of road and infrastructure designs to explain the project to clients and authorities.
Finish the program and its project — you get the course-completion certificate and a digital completion badge with your name.
Take the certification exam: a theory test on the software of the program and a practical task of the job — at the centre or online.
Pass the exam and get the certified certificate with your marksheet. Anyone can check it online with its QR code.
Your certified badge — add it to LinkedIn and share it anywhere; it opens its own verify page.
Make your CV in your student panel (Career → My CV) — your program, certificates and projects are added for you. Send it as a link with a preview picture, apply to jobs and answer Hire Me requests from companies.

A road and highway design engineer turns topographic survey data into a buildable road design. Daily work includes creating the ground model, fixing the horizontal alignment with curves, designing the vertical profile, applying typical cross-sections with lanes, shoulders, camber and superelevation, and calculating cut and fill quantities. The engineer also prepares plan and profile sheets, cross-section drawings and design inputs for reports such as detailed project reports.
Highway designers work in transportation and infrastructure consultancies, DPR consultants, EPC road contractors, survey and mapping firms, and with engineers involved in national highway, state highway, expressway, rural road and urban road projects.
India continues to build and widen roads, expressways and urban corridors, and every project needs survey, alignment design, drawings and quantities before construction and during changes on site. Engineers who can handle survey data and design roads in software such as Civil 3D and MXROAD are needed throughout the project life cycle.
Learn AutoCAD, then Civil 3D for surfaces, alignments, corridors and quantities, and MXROAD for highway design. Practise on a real survey data set and look for trainee roles at infrastructure consultancies and DPR consultants.
Civil 3D and MXROAD are both widely used for road and highway design. AutoCAD is used for drawings, and visualisation tools such as LumenRT are used to present designs.
Both are used by different consultancies. Civil 3D is a good start because it also covers survey and site work, and MXROAD adds the string-based approach many highway firms use. Knowing both widens your options.
The roadmap above adds up to about 184 hours of training, which most students complete in four to six months while practising on sample road projects.
Yes. Diploma holders commonly start as highway CAD engineers or design assistants, preparing drawings, surfaces and quantities, and grow into design roles with experience.
Yes. CADD Training Centre offers live online classes as well as classroom training. You will practise with survey data and road design exercises during the course.
